She's been called eccentric, subversive and absolutely mad as a hatter, but when it comes down to it, VIVIENNE WESTWOOD is simply one of the few designers in the fashion world with an innovative idea still left in her head. From ruffled and bunched derriere’s, to models waltzing down the runway virtually naked whilst licking Magnum ice creams, the woman is a testimony to eccentricity in all the right ways. Her most recent kooky endeavour was to draw back the curtains on uneven wealth distribution of the world, sending models down the catwalk with long prosthetic noses (like the character of Pinocchio) saying, “tax the poor and give to the rich, that’s the lie with the long nose”.
“It’s really important to support things these days. Support anything. Because everything’s connected, everything’s mixed up, everything’s a mess. And we have to save the world.” Words of the woman herself. The 79 years young Aries outré Madame is not shy in the scene of activism, from global-warming to Brexit and free speech politically-charged topics presented in her collections.
We’re here to pay homage to the iconic British designer, highlighting - with rare video footage - so of her greatest moments on the runway… followed swiftly by some Westwood inspired illustrations of my own: DB, Darcy Bucci. Without further ado, lets wind down from that NAOMI CAMPBELL tumbling to those ballooning behinds, to ice creams and beyond. Long live the Queen of Punk.
WHEN SHE MADE HEELS SO HIGH NAOMI CAMPBELL TOOK A TUMBLE:
WHEN BOOBS WERE A THING, SHE MADE BUMS A THING:
WHEN SHE SENT SUPERMODELS DOWN THE RUNWAY EATING ICE CREAM:
WHEN SHE TOLD HER MODELS TO DANCE RATHER THAN STRUT:
WHEN SHE GOT EVERY SUPERMODEL IN THE WORLD TO WALK HER SHOW:
and, no video here, but we cannot forget…
THE TIME SHE FORGOT HER KNICKERS… WHILST BEING GIVEN AN OBE BY THE QUEEN:
Vivienne received her OBE from the Queen in 1992 – wearing no knickers. No problem, thought our commando commander, until she decided to celebrate with a spin in front of waiting photographers in the Buckingham Palace courtyard. Was One amused? The Queen lol’ed so hard that she promoted her to DBE in 2006.
Now for my own illustrations... here are three designs inspired by the royally punk powerhouse:
